MMIC phase shifter in GaN HEMT technology

Are you a student eager to apply your theoretical knowledge and fresh perspectives to real-world challenges? At Saab, we believe that innovation thrives on new ideas, and your master thesis project could be the spark that ignites our next technological breakthrough.

Your role

We recognize the immense value that students bring to our company. Your academic rigor, combined with your enthusiasm for cutting-edge technology, allows you to approach problems with a unique and insightful lens. At Saab, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate with experienced engineers and specialists, gaining invaluable practical experience while making a tangible contribution to our growth and development.

Background
Active electronically scanned array (AESA) antennas can contain thousands of elements, each requiring a compact phase shifter. These phase shifters are typically implemented in GaAs or silicon MMIC/RFIC technology, while high-power amplifiers and transmit/receive switches are implemented in GaN technology.

For densely packed antennas operating above 10 GHz, particularly those using a tile architecture, integrating the phase shifter, high-power amplifier, switch and low-noise amplifier on a single chip could be an attractive solution.

Description of the Thesis Project

This thesis will explore the design of phase shifters for X-band and Ku-band applications using GaN HEMT MMIC technology. The work will include:

• A literature review of MMIC phase-shifter designs.
• Evaluation of different design concepts and selection of the most promising approach for GaN HEMT technology.
• Design of a phase shifter for X-band and/or Ku-band.
• A final report and presentation.
